The Old Rectory is the oldest preserved building in Kuopio. Its log frame was completed in 1776, around the same time Kuopio was granted city rights. Originally, the house was built as an official residence for government officials of the provincial administration, and over more than two centuries it has witnessed the city’s growth, change, and everyday life.
The building served as a rectory from the early decades of the 20th century until 2005, and it is among the first buildings in Finland to be protected under heritage conservation legislation.

Architecturally, the Old Rectory represents classical wooden architecture shaped over the centuries. Windows, porches, and interior spaces have been adapted to meet changing needs, yet the building’s historical scale and original atmosphere have been preserved. The tiled stoves, wide wooden floorboards, and traditional layout recall a time when Kuopio was only beginning to develop around it. The building has been carefully restored and maintained over time, allowing it to remain both a protected heritage site and a functional everyday space.

Today, the Old Rectory is actively used by Common Parish Work. It serves as a safe, low-threshold meeting place where a large number of children, young people, and working-age adults pass through each year. Groups gathering at the rectory include educational institutions, special education students, young adults, people facing various life crises, and different groups within disability work. The house offers a calm, homelike environment where people can pause, talk, learn, and be met. This core mission of the church is also carried out in the evenings by volunteers of the Church’s crisis helpline.

The Old Rectory is a place where past and present coexist. It is valued not as a museum, but as a living, breathing house where history provides dignity and presence creates meaning. The building is part of Kuopio’s identity—and at the same time a space that today serves those who need support, connection, and a warm place to be together.
