The story:
The 170-year-old Bishop’s House (Piispantalo) is a historically significant building and a valued part of Kuopio’s cityscape. The building was originally completed in 1856 as the official residence of Bishop Valentin Frosterus, who had it built as a home and administrative centre.
The Ladies’ Association of Kuopio has been operating in the building since 1893. The association was founded in 1860 to promote women’s opportunities to earn a living through handicrafts, and its long-standing educational mission continues today in the form of the KuopioAcademy of Design.
Today, The Bishop’s House (Piispantalo) continues to serve as a vibrant learning environment for handicrafts. The building has been renovated with respect for its history, and its premises can now be rented for parties and events. Additionally, the building has (presumably) the oldest cellar in Kuopio (estimated to date back to the 1750s), which has been refurbished into an exhibition space.
City of Kuopio, District 1, Block 5, Plot no. 1 (property identifier 297-1-5–1). The log-framed building is protected under the current local development plan with the designation sr-1 — a building of exceptional architectural and cultural-historical value. The building may not be demolished, and all repair and alteration works must be carried out in a manner that does not compromise its historical or architectural value.
