The story
The Empire-style school building was constructed in 1854 for the School for Poor Girls, which had begun operating a decade earlier (1846) in rented premises.
The school was founded by the upper-class women of the city together with J. V. Snellman, an active advocate of public education, who served as secretary and adviser at the school’s board meetings. Snellman also secured the funds for the two-classroom school building.
The building remained in use as a school until 2013 — first as Kuopio’s first primary school, then as Snellman School, and finally under the name Maria Jotuni School.
